We love to travel! Need help weeding? Like to present a new Friends program to your Friends? Thinking about moving things around and need a second or a third set of eyes? We want to help. The System administrator will visit your community or consult with you by telephone or e-mail. The administrator is available to do on-site training and will attend board meetings to discuss library related issues and concerns. All new library directors are encouraged to set up a meeting with the System administrator. You may also schedule a visit to the System office. Samples of policies, reports, long range plans, grant applications, state statutes and many other materials are available on request.
Trustees, Library Friends & other library supporters are encouraged to call the System office to obtain information relating to library statistics, statutes, funding, advice on who to contact at the regional and state level regarding library issues.
There is an awful lot to know when you work in a library! That's why much of our time and resources are devoted to training and consulting for our member libraries.
The system offers many continuing education events each year. These can be used to help a librarian attain or maintain certification. But we think they are more valuable for the practical help they provide. For example, each year we hold several meetings to work on the forms needed to apply for Universal Service Fund discounts. We will come out to your library or school media center and help you learn how to use the databases provided by the Nebraska Library Commission. Our goal is to help librarians and media specialists with whatever they need to do an effective job for their customers.
In our system plan for service, we list the following workshops as "musts" for each year:
We have an ongoing continuing education event in the form of CASTL -- Conversations Among Small-Town Librarians. This group meets informally at least 6 times per year. At each meeting, we do a round robin so librarians can share recent happenings/concerns in their libraries. We also usually have a pre-determined topic to discuss. Recent topics have included e-rate forms, standardized job titles and salaries, FirstSearch databases, and collection development issues. This is not only a very educational group, but a fun one too. We meet at various libraries around the system area, and everyone is welcome to come!
These are just a few of the workshops we will have -- keep checking our newsletter, SoLiS, and the webpage calendar to see what's available.
Training in a workshop setting is only one facet of our services. Our administrator, Brenda Ealey, is available for on-site consultation in your library or media center. She can give advice on weeding (and even help get you started!), give one-on-one instruction on database and electronic resource usage, visit with your library board, and much more. To arrange a visit, call the system office (402-467-6188/800-288-6063) or e-mail Brenda!
The Southeast Library System also cooperates with the other five regional library systems and with the Nebraska Library Commission, the Nebraska Library Association and the Nebraska Education Media Association to provide state-wide workshops, classes and seminars, drawing on the expertise of local, regional, and national presenters.
